2025 Vintage: the fulcrum of the reconquest

A vintage that is small in volume but successful in quality, 2025 appeals through its balance and even ripeness. It remains to be seen whether this potential will be able to assert itself in an uncertain economic context that is still holding back the market’s momentum.

Although not abundant, the 2025 vintage stands out as an overall qualitative success. Without giving in to enthusiasm on demand, it must be acknowledged that the vine went through the year in particularly favourable conditions: an early vegetative cycle, an untroubled flowering, a hot and dry summer that allowed even ripeness to be reached without excessive concentration. In all the appellations, the balances are rarely found wanting.

But this solid qualitative base is not enough. To these natural data is unfortunately added an uncertain economic context. International tensions weigh on trade, while American importers remain in wait-and-see mode in the face of customs uncertainties. Moreover, the rise in energy costs directly affects consumers’ purchasing power, mechanically reducing the share devoted to wine purchases.

The first market signals bear this out. Despite the superior quality of the vintage, some crus chose to open the campaign with lower prices, without triggering the expected buy-in. This caution by buyers could well form part of a lasting trend of distrust towards en primeur purchases, inviting us to completely rethink our methods of sale.

If, in practice, the volumes actually traded en primeur concern only a minority of crus, often the most elitist, the campaign cannot nonetheless be reduced to this single commercial segment, because beyond the small volumes involved, there is also a major image challenge for Bordeaux: it is the entire region that is observed, commented on and judged on this occasion.

Above all, the en primeur market crus play the role of locomotives. They capture the attention of international markets, structure the discourse of prescribers and steer flows. Their momentum irrigates the entire Bordeaux ecosystem. In export, many buyers enter through these signatures before widening their selection. In this respect, the en primeur campaign acts as an accelerator or, conversely, as a brake for the whole region.

Thus our “en primeur campaign ” retains a unique advantage, inherited from past successes: a window of international attention concentrated between early May and late June. During these few weeks, Bordeaux enjoys unequalled visibility. No other wine region has such a lever.

Even if the economic conditions of success remain uncertain today – interest rates, visibility on future valuations, increased caution of buyers – this privilege of the spotlight remains. It must also be understood as a strategic moment in which far more is at stake than the mere sale of a few grands crus.

Producers and négociants must therefore commit to the same recovery dynamic: coherence of sales policies and constancy in the effort of education. These elements condition the restarting of the Place by creating the conditions for the meeting of Bordeaux 2025 with the market.
