The estate

In brief

The history of the Pichon-Longueville family dates back to the Middle Ages. By the early 17th century, the family already owned several vineyards in the Médoc and played an important role in Bordeaux society. During the reign of Louis XIV, it was owned by Pierre de Rauzan, whose daughter married Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville, in 1694. The Pichon-Longueville vineyard in Pauillac was divided in 1850 between Baron Joseph’s five children. He divided it into two parts, one for his two sons and the other for his three daughters. The boys received 2/5 of the vines and the winery, along with the old small château known as “La Bastide”. One of the heirs, Raoul, Baron de Pichon-Longueville, built the present château in 1851. The vineyard, adjacent to that of Château Latour, stretches across the high plateau between the communes of Pauillac and Saint-Julien. The value and renown of its wines need no reminder here. In the 1990s, a major renovation programme was undertaken at the château and cellars of Pichon Baron. The new facilities, designed by Jean de Gastines and Patrick Dillon, now house one of the most modern vat houses in Bordeaux. Since 2007, a vast second underground barrel cellar has harmoniously completed the technical facilities. Château Pichon Baron has been owned by AXA Millésimes since 1987.
