Acquired in 1959, the Landereau estate was a small wine estate in a sorry state. During the first years, Henri and Michel Baylet undertook efforts of land consolidation, drainage and planting, together with efforts at rational mechanisation and enlargement of the buildings. In 1974, Landereau comprised 43 hectares of vines.
In 1980, Michel Baylet acquired two wine estates, with an area of 39 hectares. On these two estates, much work was carried out: consolidation, clearing, uprooting, earthworks, drainage and planting.
From 1988, large investments allowed the enlargement of the cellars and the installation of modern temperature-controlled vats, as well as the purchase of two pneumatic presses. It was also from 1988 that Bruno, son of Michel Baylet, launched barrel ageing of certain cuvées of red and white wines.
In 1997, a new level was reached with the making of the Cuvée Prestige of Château Landereau, a wine whose grapes come from the best plots of the vineyard, located on gravel rises. This vineyard receives special care throughout the growing cycle: short pruning, grass cover, leaf removal, green harvests, sorting of the harvest… After careful vinification, malolactic fermentation takes place in 100% new casks and ageing lasts 18 months. All this to arrive at the making of a great wine, exceptional in its quality and presentation, which lovers of great wines know how to appreciate.
Thus, in 50 years, the Baylet family has been able to build up a vineyard of 83 hectares producing more than 500,000 bottles, around ultra-sophisticated facilities that allow them to obtain excellent red wines, Clairets, rosés and whites whose qualities are recognised more each day by the various national and international competitions, the specialist press and the different guides. In 2004, this cuvée received its consecration when it was elected “Talent” of the Bordeaux Supérieur wines by a jury of professionals, an award for the best wine of its appellation.
