The estate

In brief

Romain Chaperon, a solicitor in Libourne, set up this estate around 1807 and registered the brand name “Château Daugay” with exclusive rights to the title of château. To do this, he bought a number of plots of vines from various owners (including Abbé Sèze, nephew or cousin of Louis XVI’s defender), all at the foot of Tertre Daugay (Grand Cru Classé, now known as Quintus).

The existence of Daugay is acknowledged in Le Producteur as early as 1841 and in Bordeaux et ses Vins, in the first edition of 1850. It is listed as a first-class growth.

This property was bought in 1920 from Mr Alix (grandson of Mr Chaperon) by Mr and Mrs Romieux, parents of Mr and Mrs Christian de Boüard de Laforest, co-owners of Château L’Angélus, owners since 1946.

In 1943, the syndicat national de commerce en gros des vins, cidres, spiritueux et liqueurs de

gave it a selling price of 45,000 francs, the price of the best Saint-Émilion wines.

This cru, which was integrated into and vinified at L’Angélus from 1947 to 1984, regained its autonomy at that time thanks to the construction of a new, modern winery equipped with temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.

Hélène, Christian’s daughter, took over the running of the winery in 2007, accompanied by her husband Jean-Bernard Grenié. With a view to ensuring the long-term future of production, she increased the vineyard area from 5.7 ha to 10 ha.

Since 2019, Thierry, one of their sons, has been the manager – proudly representing the 4th generation of the family at the head of the estate.
