The estate

In brief

In 1925, Savinien Giraud, president of the Pomerol wine and agricultural syndicate, sent the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce a classification of the grands crus of Pomerol in which Clos l’Église appears in the “leading pack” with l’Évangile, la Conseillante and Vieux Château Certan.
In the 18th century, Clos l’Église, with 14 hectares, was a very large estate in Pomerol. Through successive inheritance divisions, the estate was split in two, with on one side the original estate, Clos l’Église (Rouchut family) and on the other Clos L’Église-Clinet (Mauléon family). There is thus at Clos l’Église a multi-century wine-growing continuity.
Its terroir, located on a hillside at the break of the famous Pomerol plateau, today extends over 5.9 hectares.
After taking over the property in January 1997, Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard completely rethought the cellars.
The methods of vine growing and vinification remain traditional: harvest by hand, meticulous sorting in the vineyard and in the winery. Each batch is vinified separately in a 55 hl double-skin temperature-controlled stainless steel vat and all the work is done by gravity. Ageing in new barrels lasts 16 to 18 months.
The Garcin vineyards also own château Barde-Haut Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé and château Branon and château Haut-Bergey in Pessac-Léognan.
