The Vieux Guillou vineyard, a very old family property of the Villemon and Guimberteau families (including Antoine, mayor of Saint-Georges from 1894 to 1927), is still in the same family and currently belongs to Mme Jean-Paul Menguy.
Charles Cocks, in the 1868 edition of Bordeaux et ses vins, lists this cru, among the principal owners, under “Montéguillon”.
Jean-Paul Menguy, grandson of Antoine Guimberteau and president of the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation for 34 years, gave this estate its present name in 1952 and carried out its restructuring and extension. Thanks to his tenacity, his rigour and major investments in the cellars, vat rooms and farm buildings, Château Vieux Guillou is geared towards welcoming private customers. They carry far and wide the reputation of the exceptional terroir of this estate, whose wine quality had already been awarded a gold medal at the Concours Général de Paris for the 1894 harvest.
This vineyard is made up of several lots of old and classic grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Côt) spread across the whole appellation. Most of the vines are more than 40 years old. A few vines planted in 1882 and 1884 are still in production. The clay-limestone nature of the soils and the particular relief of the hillsides and plateaux allow and favour the full development of these varieties, which enjoy maximum sunshine.
The wine produced combines the characters of the greatest crus. The fine expression of the terroir is fully revealed after long ageing. This technique of ageing and selling after 5 to 7 years is the particularity of this property.
Today, Yannick Menguy, son of Jean-Paul, runs the estate and continues the family work with respect for tradition.
Easy to reach by following the D122 road from Saint-Émilion towards Montagne, the residence and cellars of Château Vieux Guillou, exposed on the southern hillsides of the appellation facing Saint-Émilion, offer a magnificent panorama and welcome all audiences under the “Vignobles et chais en Bordelais” welcome charter.
