Château Tour Haut-Caussan has an excellent vineyard. It produces an average of 100,000 bottles, all bottled at the château, of which 50% are sold in France to a loyal private clientele.
Half of this vineyard lies on the slopes and the top of a hillside near the village of Caussan. The soil, stony at the top and gravelly towards the bottom of the slopes, is very favourable to growing vines; the other half lies in Potensac, on gravel.
Fabien Courrian himself takes the greatest care over the impeccable upkeep of the vineyard and the vinification of the wines.
He pays particular attention to following the development of the wine, which is aged in barrels (1/3 new oak) for 12 months depending on the “character” and “standing” of the vintage, in order to present a bottle that will take its place with dignity on all good tables, and will make gourmets say, as the Aquitaine writer and poet Armand Got did in 1959:
Château Tour-Haut-Caussan,
Subtle Médoc full of sap,
Makes even more dazzling
The dream …
The Courrian family is also committed to showcasing its fine heritage: the property’s windmill was restored in 1981 by a compagnon du devoir, Patrick Eymeric. Then a new ageing cellar was recently built, as well as a fine half-timbered tower in 2005 (made by the same craftsman with the “grandfather’s oak”, a tree on the property for 104 years).
