Owned by Charles de Montesquieu in the 18th century, the château is today listed as a “Monument Remarquable”. After being destroyed during the French Revolution, it was rebuilt under the First Empire, then restored in 1875 by the architect Alphonse Blaquière in the Louis XIII style that you can see today. Château Saint Ahon is one of the last wine estates in the commune of Blanquefort.
In 1985, Count and Countess Bernard de Colbert, direct descendants of the famous finance minister of King Louis XIV, became the 67th owners of Château Saint Ahon and its vineyard. The château presides over 40 hectares of land, of which 30 hectares are vines.
In 2003, Nicolas and Françoise Chodron de Courcel, their son-in-law and daughter, chose to leave Paris with their children and settle at Saint Ahon, to redesign a future for the property in the midst of the wine crisis.
Firmly convinced that “only a fine vineyard can give good wine”, their choices are resolutely turned towards current know-how: plot-by-plot management of the vineyard, drainage of the plots, environmentally respectful farming limiting the impact on the natural environment, soil work, green work, but also temperature control, choice of suitable barrels…
From 2009, a gîte and a reception room have welcomed weddings, professional seminars, holidaymakers and musical evenings. In the summer of 2011, Château Saint Ahon opened its doors definitively to wine tourism with “La Petite Boutique de Saint Ahon”, a wine and delicatessen shop, and “Les Jardins de Mirabel”, a wine-themed trail in the heart of the property. These two activities complement and complete the wine tourism offer already in place.
