The estate

In brief

Château Reynon is located at Béguey, near Cadillac, on a south-facing hillside on the right bank of the Garonne. Part of the vineyard also occupies, in the neighbouring commune of Laroque, magnificent south-east-facing slopes and the old limestone terrace of a small tributary of the Garonne, the Oeuille.
The origins of the property go back to the 15th century, under the name Château de Béguey. At the end of the 15th century, the estate was still a noble house, belonging to Jean de La Roque, who also owned property at Barsac.
In the 18th century, the vineyard was in the hands of the Carle de Trajet family, who emigrated at the Revolution; it was then sold by the State to the Laspeyrère family, who built, around 1850, in place of the old château, the present neoclassical-style residence.
The property, which had taken the name Château Peyrat, was bought shortly before 1900 by Émile Pollet, wine négociant in Paris, then in 1958 by Jacques David, who joined it to his Laroque property, which he had from his father Jean David, thus forming a fine ensemble of terroirs.
In 1976, his daughter Florence and his son-in-law Denis Dubourdieu, agronomist and oenologist, succeeded him. The cru, which is now called Château Reynon, was best known in the early 1980s for its dry white Sauvignon wines. The Reynon cellar was, at that time, the favourite place of experimentation for Denis Dubourdieu, then a young researcher at the faculty of oenology specialising in the vinification of dry white wines; the techniques of skin maceration and ageing on lees in vat were first optimised at Reynon for the Sauvignon and Sémillon varieties, before being widely recommended elsewhere in the world. Thus Reynon was first known for its dry white wines.
From 1988, the restructuring of the vineyard began. The vines, established at low density in the late 1950s, were gradually replanted at 5,500 vines per ha. This transformation made it possible to reveal the remarkable potential of the clay terroir of Reynon for red wines. Ten years later, the acclaimed success of the 1998 vintage established the red Reynon among the safe bets of Bordeaux.
Deep gravel over clay subsoils occupies the top of a perfectly drained hill. At mid-slope, the land is clay-limestone and the rock outcrops in places. The foot of the slope has sandier soils.
Maintained exclusively by traditional ploughing, the soil of our vineyard receives no herbicides. Organic manures are based on plant composts. Disbudding, trellising and leaf removal are carried out by hand with meticulous care. Thus “cultivated like a garden”, in an orderly and preserved nature, our vines ripen early, producing concentrated, tasty grapes with the sweetness and aromatic brilliance of fresh fruit that we wish to find in our wines.
Château Reynon produces a red wine of the Cadillac-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation and a dry white wine of the Bordeaux appellation.
Denis and Florence Dubourdieu are also the owners of Clos Floridène in Pujols-sur-Ciron in the Graves. Denis Dubourdieu is also the owner of Châteaux Doisy-Daëne and Cantegril in Barsac. These two estates are run by Pierre & Denis Dubourdieu E.A.R.L., also the tenant company of Château Haura in Illats in the Graves. All of these crus make up the Denis Dubourdieu Domaines range.
