The estate

In brief

The known history of Château Péby Faugères goes back to the Esquissaud family, who in 1823 acquired the terroirs of Châteaux Péby Faugères and Faugères. A century later, in 1987, Pierre-Bernard Guisez inherited it. With his wife Corinne, they became involved in the life of their vineyards, strongly imprinting their pursuit of quality and their determination to make of this very fine terroir, with the help of Michel Rolland, one of the jewels of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.
From the 2000 vintage, the wines of Château Péby Faugères were singled out among the very top. For Robert Parker, Péby Faugères is one of the “24 best wines of Bordeaux” and belongs to “the legend of the future”. In March 2005, Silvio Denz became its buyer. A passionate art lover, and notably of the creations of René Lalique, he decided, in buying Château Péby Faugères, to build on its exceptional clay-limestone terroirs to sublimate their expression and take the wines of Château Péby Faugères to the highest level, multiplying the efforts to pursue quality. In the continuity of Pierre-Bernard Guisez, with Michel Rolland and the team around him, he has since made of this small exceptional growth a unique wine!
Made up of 7.45 ha, Château Péby Faugères is located in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the Dordogne valley, on a clay-limestone hillside in a single block, facing south – south-east and made up of calcosols on clay-limestone molasses, a Tertiary formation dating from the Upper Eocene and the Oligocene. A combination of a great ancient soil and a privileged microclimate, this terroir, identical to the south slope of Saint-Émilion, is a unique universe. This is what Silvio Denz and his team have clearly understood. This terroir, cultivated organically, has always received specific attention and great respect from its owners. In the cellar, the work is one of precision, thanks to the team’s know-how, the use of the most cutting-edge technologies and the input of Michel Rolland: everything is done to transcend the expression of this exceptional terroir.
In 2009, Silvio Denz gave Château Péby Faugères its definitive image: the Blackbird and the Grapes, a René Lalique design from 1928, now engraved on the bottles of Péby Faugères. An art collector passionate about Lalique, to the point of having become its owner, Silvio Denz signs here the intimate alliance of his passions: the art of René Lalique and the art of wine.
In 2012, Château Péby Faugères became a Grand Cru Classé, recognition of Silvio Denz’s ceaseless pursuit of perfection, for art and passion do not stop along the way.
