The estate

In brief

Cited at all times in our various editions, and more particularly in the 8th edition (1908), the wines of Château Montaiguillon figured prominently there, and were sold as “Cru Bourgeois, 2nd cru Saint-Émilion”. This château has belonged to the Rigou Amart family since 1949, that is, for three generations.
The wines of Châteaux Montaiguillon and Vieux-Montaiguillon are sold under the Montagne-Saint-Émilion and Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellations respectively.
This magnificent estate, entirely on hillsides, with a total area of 28 hectares of vines in a single block, has an exceptional exposure, bordering Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. It produces about 1,500 hectolitres of a wine that is both supple and well structured, but rigorous selection in favour of quality generally leads to a volume of 1,200 hectolitres being bottled at the château
Modernity and tradition combine on this estate, where temperature-controlled vats stand alongside 400 oak barrels, regularly renewed by a third each year. In 2008, the vat room was completely refurbished to bring effluent handling up to environmental standards.
Tasting this wine most often leads to the observation of a good balance of substance, alcohol and tannins, a substantial structure due to a high proportion of Cabernet, but also the finesse and amplitude brought by the Merlots, which always remain dominant.
One of the recognised great advantages of this wine is that it can be enjoyed young, three or four years after the harvest, as well as later, as its robust constitution allows it to withstand long ageing without failing.
