A true Bordeaux jewel with nearly 5 hectares, the vineyard of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is located in Pessac, on the south-western edge of Bordeaux, like its neighbour Château Haut-Brion, and is part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
From 1584 to 1789, it was the property of the religious order of the Grands Carmes. After the Revolution, it was bought by the Chantecaille family, négociants in Bordeaux, then sold at the end of 2010 to the Patrimoniale of the Pichet group which, as part of the diversification of its activities, has already planned significant investments: on the programme are the acquisition of more modern equipment and the construction of a new vat room, an ageing cellar and reception areas.
The château was built at the beginning of the 19th century at the same time as the 3-hectare park designed by the landscape gardener Fisher. Preserved since then, enclosed by walls, the property is a haven of peace in the heart of the historic Bordeaux vineyard and offers a surprisingly “warm” microclimate that protects the vineyard from spring frosts and encourages early ripening of the grapes.
In order to achieve quality work, harvesting is by hand, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and fermentation is carried out in traditional barrels, with at least 50% new barrels renewed every year, as well as ageing for eighteen months.
