Already in the first edition of “Bordeaux et ses Vins”, written by Charles Cocks in 1850, traces of this cru can be found. It belonged to a certain P. Brion and produced an average of 35 tonneaux. In 1886, in the fifth edition, it appears for the first time under the name Château Lassus, as in the successive editions up to 1929. At that date it was the property of the mayor of the commune and produced 100 tonneaux. In 1967 it was bought by the Chaumont family. From 1995, Patrick Chaumont, the second generation, made improvements in the vinification and the reputation of this cru. In 1932, Château Lassus was classified Cru Bourgeois du Médoc, recognised in 2008 in the new classification of the Crus Bourgeois.
Since 2010, Château Lassus has belonged to the Paeffgen family, which created the G.F.A. des Vignobles Paeffgen, a wine estate of 64 hectares including 39 hectares of vines: Château Lassus 24 ha, Château Le Reysse 4 hectares, Château Clos du Moulin 8.5 hectares, and Château Moulin de Lestagne 2.5 hectares. The estate includes 24 hectares of meadows and forest, which ensure a good natural balance. The grass cover in the middle of the rows allows wild plants to spread, including several varieties of orchid that grow in certain plots.
The Paeffgen family, of German origin, lives at Château Lassus in Bégadan and is well integrated in the commune. This acquisition is the start of a family project accompanied by work in which quality takes precedence over quantity. A terroir with strong qualitative potential planted with old vines yields elegant, structured wines. Investments have been made to raise the quality of the wine: Stefan Paeffgen has modified the grape reception and has renewed the stock of barrels.
