In 1997, Olivier Decelle was already interested in château Haut-Maurac. One day he arrived in Saint-Yzans-du-Médoc. The village square is called Picard. At the time, an amusing coincidence, he was still chairman of Picard Surgelés.
A promise of sale was signed, but the property slipped away from him. Three years later, the Belgian owner put it up for sale again. By then owner of the 155 hectares of Mas Amiel in Roussillon, Olivier Decelle did not hesitate: on the advice of the oenologist Jacques Boissenot, he acquired, in 2000, 28 hectares of this exceptional terroir..
The best rises in the Médoc are those that “look at the river”.
At château Haut-Maurac, the vines seem to plunge into the Gironde. Neighbouring château Loudenne and great growths, the 22 hectares of the vineyard are located on the Mazails rise, where Garonne gravel rests on alluvial deposits and clay. The pronounced slope of the rise ensures natural drainage of the plots. Their stony, airy structure is perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. These warm, deep, free-draining soils are the only ones capable of allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to complete its full vegetative cycle and reach perfect ripeness.
Château Haut-Maurac also has 6 hectares on the clay-limestone plateau of Martinet, a promised land for Merlot and Malbec, two grape varieties that express themselves in a very fresh, crystalline and mineral style.
Château Haut-Maurac has a quality-focused, classic Médoc range of grape varieties. This richness of aromatic palette gives this first wine an elegant structure combined with velvety tannins.
The choice of ageing, 80% in barrels and 20% in vats for 18 months, reconciles freshness, fine expression of fruit, structure and aromatic complexity.
The large proportion of Merlot gives it round, velvety tannins. Malbec expresses itself through a spicy note on the finish.
