Château Fourcas Hosten owes its name to M. Hosten, the first owner of the estate until its sale to the Saint-Affrique family in 1810.
Charles Cocks, in the first edition of “Bordeaux et ses Vins” in 1850, mentions it with a production of some 60 tonneaux (540 hectolitres). A few years later, in 1893, in the 6th edition of the same work, Édouard Féret placed it second in its commune with a production of 90 tonneaux. It was the same in 1929, in the 10th edition of the Féret.
A reputation as solid and tenacious from century to century is no accident, but the affirmation of an exceptional terroir made up half of Pyrenean gravel, on which the king grape varieties of the Médoc, the Cabernets, find their preferred soil. The Merlots, for their part, flourish on the plot closest to the château, clay-limestone in nature, their ideal ground for expression.
In 2006, the brothers Renaud and Laurent Momméja bought Château Fourcas Hosten and committed to continuing the long and fine history of this two-hundred-year-old property in permanent pursuit of new progress to assert the quality of its wines of character and elegance.
It is in this spirit that they launched a major renovation project with a new vat room combining concrete, wood and stainless steel, new cellars and a very extensive restructuring of the vineyard.
In respect of Médoc traditions and know-how, the vines are prepared and tended with the greatest attention, the harvest is handled with care in its smallest details, and modern vinification techniques are developed in both the vat room and the cellar so that the wine best expresses the incomparable terroir from which it comes.
Château Fourcas Hosten is a member of the Académie du vin de Bordeaux, the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux and the Commanderie du Bontemps Médoc et Graves.
