Already mentioned in 1841 in Le Producteur among the “classified” crus of the commune, and a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion since 1954, Château Chauvin lies on the boundary of the communes of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, halfway between Cheval Blanc and the Rol hill.
This four-hectare holding was acquired in 1891 by Victor Ondet; later his grandson Henri brought together nearly thirteen hectares in a single block. His great-granddaughters Marie-France and Béatrice Ondet, through the purchase of an adjoining plot, brought the area of the vineyard to fifteen hectares. The family tradition has continued for more than a century, and four generations have given this cru the most attentive care, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
When the time for retirement came, Marie-France and Béatrice Ondet chose in 2014 to hand over Château Chauvin to a member of another winegrowing family, a family from the other bank (that of the Médoc).
Sylvie Cazes is indeed taking over from them with the wish to share her passion with her daughter in the near future. This acquisition is already a story of women in the great Bordeaux tradition, of those who know how to pass things on!
No revolution, but a gentle transition; Sylvie Cazes will take the time to take the measure of the place. The wines have a firmly established recognition on the markets. No one doubts that, with her past experience, the family know-how (Lynch-Bages, Les Ormes de Pez…) and her role in the wine world (president of the preparatory association for the Cité des civilisations du vin), she will be able to give Château Chauvin all the aura necessary for its wines to shine in every corner of the globe.
