Château Brethous

Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux • 18 HA

The estate

In brief

Located at the top of the hill, firmly planted in the middle of the vines, Château Brethous is a pretty 18th-century chartreuse. The very beautiful view over the valley descending towards the Garonne contributes to the tranquillity of the site.
Historians trace it back to 1615: the Deschamps family owned the fine terroirs of Brethous. By marriage, in 1664, Pierre Brethous, a surgeon in Bordeaux, originally from Saint Sever in the Landes, acquired the place and gave it his name. His descendants built the longère, or chartreuse, with the adjoining cellar, in the 18th century and gave their name to the estate.
The cellar was intelligently built for the production of quality wines and plot-by-plot vinification. Its fine arched vaults and fine proportions add to its charm and originality.
François and Denise Verdier acquired Château Brethous in 1964 and completely restructured the vineyard and the cellar. They set up the direct marketing of Château Brethous.
Since 1999, their daughter Cécile has managed the estate with her husband Thierry Mallié. Together they are taking up the challenge of organic and biodynamic farming and developing exports.
Château Brethous is a pretty family property on a human scale where visitors appreciate the serenity and beauty of the landscapes.
Our vines are cultivated with a concern for respecting human health and the environment. 2008 was a genuine turning point towards organic and biodynamic vine growing.
The quality of the vineyard’s production depends on the terroir and above all on what the winegrower makes of it. We seek the balance between the vitality of the vine and the quality of the grapes. Low yields, around 35 hl/ha, contribute to the richness and concentration of the wines of Château Brethous.
The vinifications are rethought every year to respect the grapes of Château Brethous as much as possible : balance between fruit and structure, expression of the authenticity of the terroir of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux, renamed Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux.
The red wines of Château Brethous are concentrated, balanced and fruity, with fine, elegant and silky tannins. Their aromas evoke red and black fruit with a delicate frame.
A fresh and fruity Bordeaux Clairet is also much appreciated for its rich aromatic palette of fruit.
Food lovers and gourmets will always take pleasure in drinking the wines of Château Brethous, authentic and warm. They go perfectly with fine cuisine from around the world and festive evenings.
