The estate

In brief

Located close to four important Roman roads and recorded by the Cassini family, cartographers of the 18th century, Biac has existed as an estate for more than 600 years.
Having belonged to the family of the Baron de Langoiran, Jacques de Galateau, lord of Biac, the estate was sold in 1820 by the heirs of his daughter, wife of Jean de la Marthonie, a noble Bordeaux family, to Grégoire François Andrieu, mayor of Langoiran. Under his family’s leadership, Biac began its rise towards renown for its wines: “the whites came from Yquem and the reds from the best growths of Saint-Émilion” (Bordeaux et ses vins, Éditions Féret, 1874, 1893, 1929); Biac wine began to be known as “elegant, a fine wine and one of the best growths of the region”. It was awarded several prizes of excellence as early as the 19th century.
One hundred and thirty years later, the descendants of the Andrieu family sold it to the oenologist Fréderic Bonnard, a distant relative of the famous painter of the same name. A succession of owners followed, the most attentive being Paul and Nicole Hélène Ducatez.
In 2006, Tony and Youmna Asseily and their children, of Lebanese nationality, acquired château Biac and very quickly benefited from the help of a consulting team determined to perpetuate the tradition of excellence of this exceptional property.
An ambitious vineyard restructuring plan was put in place, based on analyses of deep soil pits at various key locations on the property. The new vines are replanted at 1.10 metres between rows and 1 metre between vines; soil work is carried out according to a sustainable farming policy, respecting nature. The reinstatement of country hedgerows and a flowering fallow in the heart of the vines help to improve the natural biodiversity of this “garden” vineyard. The cellar has been entirely renovated and fitted with a vat room combining new techniques and tradition, reflecting a policy of micro-parcel harvesting and vinification, thus allowing meticulous, attentive and careful ageing of the wines.
More recently, in 2013, a new building including a bottle store and a tasting room was built. The room, with a view over the Garonne, is available to visitors to enhance their stay in the region. It can also be used for events such as small seminars and intimate celebrations.
Biac is one of the high places of the Bordeaux terroir: its unique site facing the Garonne, the gentleness of its slopes and the natural amphitheatre of its hillsides make it “a viewpoint worth a journey” (Patrick Léon). Its wines are but the true reflection of it…
