The estate

In brief

Berliquet is the name of a very ancient place, as attested by a deed of 5 October 1749, “made and passed at the place called Berliquet, parish of Saint-Martin, jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion”. This same deed indicates that Paul-Romain de Sèze was at that time the owner of Berliquet. He was a priest, doctor of theology and perpetual vicar of the parish of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. He was also the brother of Raymond de Sèze, Louis XVI’s lawyer. Abbé de Sèze died in 1788 and bequeathed the property to his nephew, Jean-Pierre de Sèze, known as Dunoyer.
On 7 April 1794, Gaston Jeune, a famous Libourne broker, noted in his notebooks that the en primeur record was reached at 245 livres by a Saint-Émilion wine from the “cru de Berliquet”. This would be one of the oldest mentions of a growth designated by its name.
Two years before his death, Dunoyer sold Berliquet to Dominique Perès. The sale was concluded on 8 Fructidor, Year XIII, that is 8 August 1805. Berliquet would remain in this family for more than a century and be sold, because of joint ownership, on 6 April 1918.
The buyer was Count Louis de Carles, last descendant of one of the oldest families of Bordeaux, which over the centuries has owned the best growths of the Saint-Émilion jurisdiction. The growth then passed to his daughter, Gisèle de Lesquen, in 1944. Her son, Patrick de Lesquen, and his children are still the owners of Berliquet. They entrusted its management to Nicolas Thienpont and his team in 2008.
To obtain the best quality at harvest, the vine, pruned in double Guyot, undergoes disbudding, green harvest and leaf removal. The grapes are picked by hand, sorted in the vineyard and on tables in the winery. The wines are aged in barrels stored in the centuries-old quarries beneath the château.
The 1986 classification enabled château Berliquet to regain the place it once held among the great wines of Saint-Émilion.
Château Berliquet is an associate member of the Académie des Vins de Bordeaux and of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
