Can digital beat downy mildew?
Open data and AI to the rescue of the industry!
Between climate change, increased pressure to reduce plant-protection inputs and a difficult economic context, protecting the vine against disease is becoming a headache for many winegrowers and a major issue for the wine industry. Recent vintages — such as 2023 and 2024 — showed exceptional downy mildew pressure that weighed, at times very heavily, on estate yields and, in fine, on their profitability.
Many digital tools are available to help growers determine and implement their plant-protection strategy, and new solutions appear regularly. Today, a new milestone could be reached thanks to progress in artificial intelligence, the mobilisation of open data and new agronomic knowledge.
