Sainte-Croix-du-Mont

Nature has doubly favored this small region, located some 45 kilometers from Bordeaux and bordering the Garonne River on the right bank. A picturesque site and an exceptional terroir for the production of great "sweet" white wines.
There is nothing more attractive for the visitor than to walk through the privileged area where Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle mix their warm and rich sap from which will come out these incomparable wines which each, with its particular qualities, make the glory and the richness of these wine-producing regions of which Sauternes, on the left bank, and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, on the right bank, are the standard bearers. Pleasure for the eyes and joy for the delicate palate, this is certainly enough to satisfy the most demanding. The vineyard of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont is constituted by a very homogeneous whole which extends on the hillsides with often abrupt slopes.
The nature of the soil, the grape varieties, the harvest and the vinification similar to those of Sauternes, allow to produce, with the help of the climate, a "sweet" wine of the highest order. To the south, at the foot of the slopes, a narrow strip of land bordering the river is made up of modern alluvium (palus). There are various crops and some red vineyards.
On the rest of the commune, with its tormented relief, the soil, essentially composed of clay-limestone soil where oyster shells and other varieties of fossils of marine origin sometimes appear, rests on the same limestone rock; towards the north, the soil becomes clayey-sandy with, in the subsoil, some gravelly areas. It is on the plateaus and the slopes of the hillsides that the vineyards and crus are located, producing the AOC Sainte-Croix-du-Mont wines.

About the wines
If the white wine of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont seems less racy than that of Sauternes, it has however a semi-sweetness, a fruitiness, a sap and an elegance likely to give satisfaction to the most demanding and most delicate palates. Of course, the quality also varies according to the nature of the soil and subsoil, as well as the care taken in the cultivation and especially in the harvesting and vinification. Like all sweet wines, these are wines whose bouquet and flavor become richer with age.
The white wines produced in the Sainte-Croix-du-Mont appellation area can benefit from the Bordeaux supérieur or Bordeaux appellation, as well as recently from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, whose area has been extended to the communes of Loupiac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, as long as they fulfill the conditions they must meet to obtain one of these AOCs.
