Margaux

rouge • 1500 ha

As in most of the vineyards surrounding Bordeaux, the vine appeared in the Margaux region in Gallo-Roman times.

However, if at the beginning of the 18th century, a text mentions Château Margaux, it is only at the end of this same century that the owners become aware of the value of the terroirs and the techniques of elaboration and aging of the wines.

The contours of the Margaux appellation were defined a little less than a century after the famous classification of 1855 which distinguished no less than 21 grands crus classés in the four communes of the appellation.

The vines of Margaux are planted on gravelly hilltops, shaped by erosion, which gradually descend towards the river. They are the result of the accumulation of materials that were rolled from the Pyrenees by the ancient courses of the Garonne, during the glacial periods of the Quaternary. These deposits, often several meters thick, are made up of gravel and pebbles of various sizes, embedded in a sandy to clayey-sandy matrix. They rest on a much older bedrock, of Tertiary age, predominantly clay and limestone.

Well protected from the oceanic winds by the forest, this terroir benefits from the Gironde estuary, which provides excellent air circulation to temper the climate. The poverty of the soils combined with their excellent natural drainage, allows a deep rooting of the vines and brings together the ideal conditions for obtaining great wines.

About the wines

The wines of the Margaux appellation have a beautiful ruby color, a lot of finesse and delicacy while being very complex with a characteristic bouquet.

For many wine lovers, Margaux is one of the best wines in the world; whatever its origin, Cru Classé, Cru Bourgeois, Cru Artisan or other, it offers an exceptional and infinite palette of fruity flavors. They possess an elegant, subtle and consistent sap. Its delicacy, its suppleness and its fruity and fine aromas make it say that it is "the most feminine of the Médoc...".
