Loupiac

Nearly 40 kilometers upstream from Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Garonne, the hillsides of Loupiac follow, towards the west, those of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont.

If the town is located at the foot of the slopes and, as a result, has sometimes suffered from the whims of the Garonne River, which has left its bed, the vine, on the other hand, has taken advantage of the southern exposure of the slopes, which are often quite steep, and has been established in this region since ancient times. Some authors, in fact, have found traces of its presence since the end of the 13th century. Moreover, mosaics and other archaeological discoveries show that Loupiac had a Gallo-Roman population.

Camille Jullian locates, on the site of the old priory of Saint-Romain, the presence of a villa which would have belonged to Ausone.

As in the region of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, the relief is also tormented there. The soil is also of the same nature: clay-limestone or clay-sand towards the east. It is on this soil that the vineyard is located. On the edge of the Garonne, towards the west, we find classic "palus" land.

As in Sainte-Croix-du-Mont and in the neighboring regions, the southern exposure of the vineyard and the autumn fog create a microclimate favorable to the development of noble rot, which allows the production of renowned sweet wines.

About the wines

The white wine of Loupiac has a smoothness, a fruitiness and a sapiness likely to give satisfaction to the most demanding and delicate palates. The qualities of this firm and generous wine only increase with age.

As is the case for all sweet wines, the quality of each wine depends obviously on the nature of its terroir but also and for a large part on the care given by the winegrower to the cultivation and especially to the harvesting and vinification. Also, its gustatory intensity varies from one property to another and certain aromas can evolve according to the age of the wine.

The white wines produced in the Loupiac appellation area can benefit from the Bordeaux supérieur or Bordeaux appellation, as well as recently from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation whose area has been extended to the communes of Loupiac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, as long as they fulfill the conditions they must meet to obtain one of these AOCs.
