Clos Haut-Peyraguey

Peyraguey, whose name means hill or promontory, is a former barony acquired in the 18th century by the president of the Bordeaux parliament, Nicolas-Pierre de Pichard, who was guillotined during the Revolution. It was at that time that Monsieur Lafaurie acquired the estate under the name Pichard-Lafaurie.
Between 1864 and 1879 this property passed from the hands of Monsieur Saint Rieul Dupouy to those of Count Duchatel, and when the latter’s inheritance was divided in 1879 the estate was split in two. This is how Clos Haut-Peyraguey was born, crowning the highest land on the hill of Bommes. The latter was then acquired by a Parisian pharmacist, Monsieur Grillon.
In 1914, Eugène Garbay, great-grandfather of Jacques Pauly, acquired Clos Haut-Peyraguey together with Fernand Ginestet (he already owned Château Haut-Bommes). At the end of 2012 Bernard Magrez acquired this Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes. He thus became the only Bordeaux owner of four Grands Crus Classés in each of the great Bordeaux appellations that gave rise to a classification.
Clos Haut-Peyraguey, the smallest property among the Premiers Crus Classés, is located on a hillside between 50 and 80 metres in altitude, in the centre of the Sauternes grands crus zone, facing château d’Yquem. The exceptional nature of its sand-gravel soil over a clay subsoil and the north-easterly orientation of its slopes make it a land of first choice. This demanding soil requires good drainage, but gives the wines an inimitable style combining elegance, finesse, aromatic richness and fine concentration.
Cultivation practices are sustainable and constantly evolving in order to obtain the healthiest possible grapes until the arrival of noble rot, to achieve pure Botrytis and ever more precise wines.
