Château Sigognac, classified as a Cru Bourgeois du Médoc in 1932, is located in the plain of Saint-Yzans on the ruins of a Roman “Villa d’Ausone”, whose baths were uncovered in the neighbouring “Bois carré”. At the time it was called Ciconius.
In the 16th century, old grimoires mention the noble house of Segougnac, which belonged to the Count of Lesparre.
From the 18th century, the wine of Château Sigognac was sold for export to many countries. In the museum of the Compagnie des Indes in Lorient there is, moreover, the model of a ship, fitted out in 1740, on which barrels stamped “Sigognac” are stored.
According to more recent notarial deeds drawn up at Lesparre, we see that M. Martin Subercaseaux acquired the 100-hectare Sigognac estate on 8 September 1828.
After many inheritances, Château Sigognac came into the hands of M. and Mme Caussade on 21 January 1898. The Caussade family sold it in the 1950s as a life annuity to M. Sarrazin, who, after the sadly infamous frosts of 1956, uprooted almost all the vines.
It was only on 20 February 1964 that M. and Mme Paul-François Grasset acquired this 58-hectare estate, on which only 4 hectares of vines remained.
In March 2009, M. and Mme Bonny ceded their estate to the vineyards Allard SAS, chaired by M. Christophe Allard. Château Sigognac continues along the path of modernisation and reconnects with the traditions and know-how that have always made its wine an extremely prized growth.
