Château Pontoise Cabarrus is a cru bourgeois located in Saint Seurin de Cadourne. Its origin goes back to the 18th century, a time when the growths of Saint Seurin were classified as parish premiers crus on a par with those of Pauillac, Margaux or Saint Julien.
Until 1795 it belonged to the Baron de Brane, famous owner of Mouton, now Mouton Rothschild.
Jean Valère Cabarrus, owner of Château Lagrange, then acquired it and decided to give his name to the estate. Pontoise became Pontoise Cabarrus.
The name of the château was later made famous thanks to the beautiful Thérésa Cabarrus, daughter of François de Cabarrus, banker to the King of Spain, and wife of the Convention member Tallien. Close to Napoleon and Josephine, they were witnesses at their wedding.
It was in 1859 that the Cabarrus family conceded this estate to the Bouillaud family, who also headed the Brochon growth, named after the famous family of Bordeaux lawyers of the period.
In 1959, Emile Tereygeol bought the estate from Fernande Blois, a descendant of the Bouillaud family, wine broker and the first woman to practise this profession in the Médoc.
As the 1978 classification attests, Château Pontoise Cabarrus was then a “Cru Grand Bourgeois” , which placed it among the best estates of the Haut Médoc.
When Emile Tereygeol bought the property, only 7 hectares of vines were in production out of the 15 that make up the estate. He devoted himself to enhancing them while strengthening the image of Pontoise among the négociants of the Place de Bordeaux.
Thus, the wines of Pontoise Cabarrus were sold en primeur like the classified growths of 1855.
This commercial approach established the renown of Pontoise, and when François Tereygeol succeeded his father in 1973, he quite naturally developed the estate to bring it to the 28 hectares of gravel that make it up today around the original plots.
He then chose to surround himself with the advice of his friend Jacques Boissenot and his son Eric, renowned oenologists of the Médoc, in order to optimise the quality of his wines.
For some years now, Eric and Laurent Tereygeol, his children, have continued the work begun more than 50 years ago to enhance this exceptional terroir.
