Château Pavie Macquin

1er Grand Cru Classé
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 15.3 HA

The estate

In brief

Château Pavie-Macquin is superbly situated: to the south, above the limestone cornice of the great hillside of Saint-Émilion; to the west, opposite the medieval town, it overlooks the Fongaban valley, facing our greatest flagships, whose soil types it shares.
The whole vineyard, in a single block, sits on a plateau, sunny on all sides. A terroir par excellence, it enjoys a climate with Mediterranean nuances, which the presence of numerous holm oaks seems to prove, and which in themselves testify to a dry, bright and sunny climate.
The property was acquired by M. Albert Macquin, the man behind the reconversion of the Libourne vineyards: a student of Paris-Grignon and Montpellier, he specialised in the study of American rootstocks and the art of grafting. The region owes to him the reconstitution of its vineyard after the phylloxera attack.
A fine 15-hectare estate, traditional methods of cultivation and vinification combined with other, more modern methods make Pavie-Macquin a “flagship cru” of Saint-Émilion.
The manager, Nicolas Thienpont, and Stéphane Derenoncourt, a consultant whose reputation is well established, have since 1995 given new impetus to this Grand Cru Classé, making it a Premier (since 2006).
