The estate

In brief

With its Ionic peristyle, its monumental staircase and its classical façade, Château Margaux is in harmony with the illustrious growth whose name it bears.
This nobility of balance and measure, this sumptuousness, define both this architectural jewel and the wine produced by the vines that surround it.
In the 12th century, known as La Mothe, it belonged to the powerful Albret family. Later it passed to the Montferrands, then to the lords of Durfort, and finally to the Lestonnac family at the end of the 16th century, who completed the formation of the estate as we know it today. In the mid-18th century, Château Margaux became the property of M. de Fumel, military commander of Bordeaux, who greatly contributed to perpetuating the fame of this magnificent estate. In 1802, the Marquis de La Colonilla bought it, razed the old Gothic manor and had built in its place, by the architect Louis Combes, a pupil of Victor Louis, the château that has been admired ever since. In 1879, Count Pillet-Will further improved the reputation of this vineyard. Currently, the château and the 262 hectares — including 80 hectares of red vines — that surround it are the property of Corinne Mentzelopoulos, who, since the death of her father, André Mentzelopoulos, now watches over the destiny of this great growth.
Although it is considerable in size, this vineyard is cultivated with meticulous application and a devout respect for quality. Only wines that have undergone the trials of a severe selection are admitted to the honour of bearing the Château Margaux label. This extremely rigorous selection leads to a second wine, of the same breeding but to be drunk younger, offered under the label Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux. Since the 2009 vintage, a third wine, Margaux du Château Margaux, has been bottled at the estate. A fourth wine is also sold in bulk to a few Bordeaux négociants.
A plot of very fine gravel of about 12 hectares has been devoted for over a century to the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety, which produces, in limited quantity, an original and subtle dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux.
