Members of a cooperative cellar until 1997, Marie-Françoise Brun and her husband Jean-Denis, after long and careful reflection, decided to take the destiny of this growth completely into their own hands. Marie-Françoise’s ancestors have been settled and born in Mareil for at least four hundred years, as certain documents attest, and each generation has developed this corner of the Médoc. Naturally, vine growing is the main activity of this family property. In the Producteur of 1838, one finds the name of an ancestor of Madame Brun who produced 6 barrels of red wine. Later, the various editions of Bordeaux et ses Vins ® regularly cite at Mareil, under the same family name or that of a son-in-law, an average production of 15 barrels. In this regard, it is amusing to note that Mareil has often been handed down from mother to daughter.
Today, château Mareil, a pleasant Gironde residence, commands an estate lying between the Abbaye de l’Isle, founded in 1079, and Mareil. The vines, divided mainly into two blocks, grow on the more or less pronounced undulations of a sort of plateau or terrace. Certain plots have undergone major earthworks and drainage to allow the terroir to develop its best expression.
Thus, while continuing to develop the viticultural potential of château Mareil, Madame Brun has equipped her estate with a vast and functional winemaking installation (vat room and barrel and storage cellars) that allows her to produce wines of quality and high standing, as we were able to verify.
The wines of Mareil, under their fine deep ruby colour, show a powerful, complex nose in which one perceives notes of well-ripened red fruit as well as gamey fragrances. Depending on the structure and quality of the vintage, and with the help of consultant oenologist Antoine Médeville, part of the harvest is selected to be aged in casks, which brings it some vanilla and oaky notes to excellent effect. This production is also presented under the château Mareil label but carries the additional mention “Cuvée Prestige”.
And, if château Mareil does not produce a wine like no other, it satisfies a growing number of lovers and tasters of good wines in France and abroad. A fine reward for a craft practised with passion.
