Magnan-La Gaffelière is a very old cru. As long ago as 1777, it was sold to Horeau Beylot, a merchant in Libourne. As in the past, this vineyard is cultivated with the greatest care: the vines are still tied to wicker or “vime”, the local name for these highly flexible wicker stems, which are produced on the embankments and ditches that border the property.
A group of people took over this vineyard, along with Clos La Madeleine, in 1992. Thanks to changes in winemaking methods and the renovation of the winery, which included the enlargement of the barrel cellar in 1998, the grapes, whose production is deliberately limited, can be vinified and matured in the best possible conditions.
Magnan-La Gaffelière, situated on the sandy glacis that makes up its terroir, expresses all the finesse of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, whose discreet power asserts itself over time. Château La Tandonne, with a surface area of 1 hectare, produces a Saint-Émilion that is all fruit, developing typical animal notes with a hint of vivacity.
