The estate

In brief

With an area of 7 hectares in a single block, Château Le Pape produces a quality red wine that has won several medals. It is an old estate, located in Léognan, which benefits from an excellent terroir and a commanding position.
Château Le Pape came into being at the end of the 18th century. Pierre Bobineau, master sailmaker in Bordeaux, was its creator. He devoted his life to this estate: buying plot after plot, endowing the whole with a fine manor house around 1805, and building up, on the best gravel terroirs, a vineyard that would earn its credentials over the following decades.
After belonging in 1836 to a Spanish priest exiled from his native Catalonia, Château Le Pape was bought in 1841 by Raymond Eugène Goëthals, a painter renowned for his seascapes and landscapes. He found there all the serenity needed for his art. Alexandrine drew from it the inspiration that led her to a career as a musician.
To this score was added later a motto: “Do little, but do it well”. As early as 1928, the red wine of Château Le Pape won the Grand Prize at the international exhibition in Brussels, followed by a gold medal in Paris in 1931. The wines of Château Le Pape attracted the interest of important Bordeaux négociants, who also owned estates in the Médoc and Saint-Émilion. The Theil, Legros and Monjanel families successively invested in the vineyard.
Owned by Robert G. Wilmers since January 2012, Château Le Pape now benefits from the expertise of a Grand Cru Classé, since the Château Haut-Bailly team puts its know-how at the service of this promising terroir.
The investments under way will give this growth the means to regain a distinct identity and raise it among the very best of its appellation.
