Overlooking the confluence of the Garonne and the Dordogne, the vines of Clos du Notaire cover an area of 18 hectares and benefit from a microclimate due to the proximity of the estuary and the south-facing slope of its hillsides. The limestone subsoil, long quarried, allows drainage in winter and keeps the soil cool in summer.
This old vineyard, cultivated in the last century by a mason from Bourg, M. Bernard, was already mentioned in our 1874 edition as a second cru Bourgeois and first cru Artisan at the place called Camillac, on the site of a 14th-century abbey. It was passed to Maître Menard, solicitor in Jonzac, then to his son-in-law Henri Coutin, notary, who gave it its name of Clos des Notaires.
Since 1974, Roland and Marie Sylvette Charbonnier, successors of Jacques Coutin, the notary’s son, have continued the tradition of quality and improved the vineyard and the cellars.
This terroir, combined with careful vinification and ageing in vats and new barrels, gives a superb wine with oak that is present but not excessive, round and supple on the palate and strongly aromatic. These qualities have earned it many medals in Paris as well as in Bordeaux and Mâcon, as well as glowing mentions in specialist magazines, a fair result of the efforts made in the vineyard, in the cellars and in marketing.
