Château Larrivaux Vicomtesse de Carheil is one of the few estates in the Médoc that has belonged to the same family for more than three centuries. Curiously, it has been handed down through the women, and its owners have successively been the Marquise de la Barre de Larrivaux, the Marquise de Paroy, the Vicomtesse du Hamel, the Marquise de Chabot-Maulevrier, the Vicomtesse de Carheil, Madame Carlsberg, G.F.A. du château Larrivaux.
Larrivaux presides over an estate of 100 hectares including woodland, meadows and old quarries. The vineyard is planted on well-oriented gravelly hills, which are choice terrain, since they have the same content and quality as those of the great crus neighbouring Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe.
Franck, in 1824, in his “Traité sur les Vins du Médoc”, ranks Larrivaux among the two best crus of the commune. Paguierre, in 1829, in his “Classification et description des Vins de Bordeaux”, places it at the head of Cissac.
The wines of Larrivaux are of a fine, deep red colour, both warm and supple; they are characterised by their roundness, fine bouquet and good length on the palate.
