Owners in Saint-Émilion since 1610, the Gurchy family created the Château Laroze estate in 1882, of which the Meslin family, their direct descendants, are the present owners. Originally, three vineyards with a total area of 15 hectares were brought together.
Over a century, successive generations enlarged this holding to 30 hectares in a single block (27 of them planted with vines), spreading at the very foot of the Saint-Émilion hillside, with a soil rich in silica and a clay subsoil.
The finest grape varieties of the region, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, are grown here, with the utmost respect for the vines and their bunches.
Each harvest, carried out by hand, is followed by precise sorting that guarantees wines of the very highest quality. The wines, vinified in the best conditions, are aged for 18 months in oak casks and bottled at the château.
The average production of Château Laroze is 7,000 cases of wine. It has been a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion since the first classification of 1956.
Under the dynamic leadership of Guy Meslin, major renovation and improvement work has been undertaken since 1993, both in equipment and buildings (vat room, barrel cellar, bottle storage cellar, offices and farm equipment) and in the vines themselves (improvement of plant material, underground water drainage, working methods, control of production, restructuring of the vineyard with high-density plantings since 2005).
The wines of Château Laroze manage to marry balance and elegance with richness and power. They can be drunk fairly young and reach their optimum development after 7 to 12 years of ageing. In favourable conditions, they improve for 15 or 20 years or more.
