The known origin of Château La Tour de By goes back to 1599, when it was acquired by Pierre Tizon, lord of the fief of By. It is hard to be closer to the estuary than this cru, whose gravel mound is topped by an old lighthouse watching over navigation, which since 1825 has been the emblem of the vineyard. From 1965, Marc Pagès, an agricultural engineer who came from Tunisia, would sign the rebirth of this North Médoc cru. Worked as a family, this magnificent terroir with superb Gironde gravel produces fine and elegant wines, well coloured, richly endowed and powerful. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives them great finesse and a firm yet velvety structure, placing La Tour de By among the very top ranks of Médoc wines. Marc Pagès, who was alongside Leclerc one of the first to enter liberated Strasbourg at the controls of his tank in the 2nd Armoured Division, managed in four decades to raise the estate to the level of the very exclusive club of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
Arriving at the estate in 2005, Frédéric Le Clerc succeeded his grandfather, Marc Pagès (who died in 2007), at the head of the estate. A water and forestry engineer, this former head of an environmental research unit does everything to combine his work as a winegrower with respect for nature.
