The name “La Pointe” originates from the particular geometry of the vineyard. At the entrance to the estate, it is still possible to see a large triangular plot, in the shape of a point.
For more than a century and a half, its vast park of two hectares and its centuries-old trees have made Château La Pointe an exceptional residence. The true rise of the estate dates from the end of the Second Empire. Thanks to its Directoire-style residence, Château La Pointe was in 1868 one of the first two properties in Pomerol to use the word “château”. Already at that time, the vineyard comprised 22 hectares, which has always helped place the estate among the largest of the appellation. Writings report that from 1882 its wines were rewarded, notably with a silver medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition, as well as at the Amsterdam Universal Exhibition in 1883.
Although this cru has always produced great wines, it has strong potential for qualitative development. To this end several projects aimed at optimising the quality of the wine and developing the image of the estate have been launched in recent years.
First, a complete study of the soils and subsoils of the estate was carried out. Its results made it possible to optimise the drainage system thanks to major work carried out on nearly a third of the vineyard during the summers of 2008 and 2009. They also determined the introduction of a rigorous plot management programme. In the same spirit, in order to better respect the particularities of the vineyard and extend viticultural management into the cellar, a new vat room came into being for the 2009 harvest. Designed with respect for current environmental expectations, it incorporates a solar power plant and rainwater recovery.
Controlled yields and a constant concern for qualitative research during the making of the wines already allow the full expression of the terroir of Château La Pointe, which spontaneously gives wines in which seduction is combined with elegance.
A quality visitor programme will be set up at the estate so that all enthusiasts can soon discover the soul and charm of this residence where great Pomerol wines are born.
