The estate

In brief

The origins of Château La Lagune undoubtedly go back to the early 18th century, and its renown was recognised very quickly, since in 1855 the estate was classified as a Third Growth. Several owners followed one another there with varying fortunes, and in the aftermath of the Great War the estate was in decline. It was then that Georges Brunet acquired it and set about restoring it in 1958. After partly rebuilding the vineyard and reconstructing some buildings, he was obliged to hand over to a man from Champagne, Mr René Chayoux, who was CEO of Champagne Ayala and had been for a few years the owner of Château Phélan Ségur. René Chayoux continued the restoration of the buildings and tripled the surface area of the vineyard. He was helped in his task by his collaborator, Jean-Michel Ducellier. Château La Lagune has become one of the finest estates in the Médoc and its wines enjoy a worldwide reputation. It has belonged to the Frey group since 1999.
The Château La Lagune vineyard extends over 82 hectares, largely grouped around the château and the cellars.
The technical facilities are exceptional. A brand-new vat room has just been built using the most modern processes while maintaining Médoc traditions. The château itself, elegant and balanced, was entirely renovated in 2003.
The average production of Château La Lagune is 390 barrels. Its wines are sold in France, but are much appreciated abroad, particularly in England, Belgium, Holland, the United States, Asia and Russia.
Their colour, body and bouquet are maintained for a very long time. Here, on this subject, are a few assessments: “We tasted its 1828 wines, which had kept perfectly, after a stay of nearly forty years in bottle”. (Ch. de Lorbac, Richesse gastr., 1867). “The wines of Château La Lagune have a very special stamp and very remarkable qualities, which make them sought after by all the most distinguished gourmets. La Lagune can boast a distinctive character unlike any other, and this originality alone would suffice to sustain its merits”. (Alfred Danflou, Les grands vins bordelais, 1867).
“Certain growths have been seen, Château La Lagune for example, that have kept intact even after forty years; not all Médoc wines reach this age with impunity”. (S. Simonin, Les grands ports de commerce de La France, 1878).
This standing has been confirmed by awards both old and recent, among which the following may be cited:
gold medal at the exhibitions: Lyon, 1872; Paris, 1889; Tours, 1892; Lyon, 1894; Paris 1900. Diplomas of honour at Antwerp, 1894; Bordeaux, 1895; Rouen, 1896; Brussels, 1897; Bordeaux, 1907. The cross of honour at Amsterdam, 1895. The grand prize at Saint-Louis, 1904 (collective of the Grands Crus); Liège, 1905; Bordeaux, 1907, collectively, grand prize with medal at the Mâcon fair, 1960 and 1961.
