Château Haut-Lagrange is an estate created by Francis Boutemy in 1989 on a very fine gravel terroir formerly planted with vines. The famous Belleyme map drawn up in 1763 already mentions its presence, proof of the qualitative recognition of this terroir.
Château Haut-Lagrange is located 15 kilometres south of Bordeaux, in the commune of Léognan, at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the communal appellation of the Graves. It is surrounded by several great Crus Classés de Graves.
When planting the vineyard, Francis Boutemy, drawing on his perfect knowledge of this Graves terroir, which he had seen evolve over decades, listened to the wise advice of the best vine and wine specialists and put in place traditional cultivation techniques with high-performance equipment. He also selected the grape varieties, rootstocks and clones best suited to the geological characteristics of the terroir.
Having surrounded himself with a team of competent professionals, he introduced the HACCP method in order to improve upstream monitoring and thus better control the production parameters that guarantee the quality of his wines.
The planting was the object of careful attention. Thus, subsoiling (breaking up the subsoil to a depth of more than one metre) and drainage prevent excess water, so that the vine’s root receives at depth, as regularly as possible, a supply enriched in nutrients by the layer of gravel.
The soil is worked conventionally. The planting density is 7,700 vines per hectare. By destemming, production is deliberately reduced, depending on the year, by 10 to 20% below the permitted yields. Harvesting is by hand with sorting of the grapes in the vineyard.
Everything is thus done to obtain quality grapes, which alone make great wines.
Francis Boutemy and his son Ghislain, an agronomist and oenologist, demanding and rigorous in the care given to vine growing and vinification, combined with the geographical position of Haut-Lagrange on this historic terroir in the heart of the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation, make Château Haut-Lagrange a grand cru among the grands crus.
Today 60% of the production is exported to more than 28 countries on the 5 continents. In France, Château Haut-Lagrange is found exclusively on the lists of many restaurants, very often starred, and at the best wine merchants and caterers.
