Dedicated to the vine for several centuries, this great, specific terroir overlooking the Gironde was already mentioned among the best Crus in the 1st edition of the Féret of 1850 (Ch. Cocks), under the name of its former owner M. Berniard. After its acquisition by Hervé Romat and Jean Mallet in 2004, François Tailliez joined them in 2012. Having been the first customer of Château Grand-Maison, exporting it to many countries, and following Jean Mallet’s wish for a partial withdrawal, he joined them with great enthusiasm.
The intent of the three owners can be described through their activities: Hervé Romat, a consultant oenologist renowned in France and in many wine-producing countries; François Tailliez, oenologist, invested in tasting and with good commercial knowledge of exporting ; Jean Mallet, a recognised winegrower in the Côtes de Bourg who knows the world’s vineyards well. Modest in size but great in terroir, Château Grand-Maison is driven by determination and rigour : green work, hand harvesting, mechanical and manual sorting of the harvest, vinification combining modernity and tradition, strict selections, and ageing in grand-cru-type barrels, giving it a complexity worthy of the best great wines of Bordeaux.
The only investments, but not the least, are partial replantings, with quality rootstocks suited to the specificity of the soils. As for grape varieties, an important proportion of 15% Malbec is maintained, giving the wine specific fruit and spice notes and an original texture.
The arrival of François Tailliez has brought no significant change in style, other than a viewpoint and a level of demand that add to those of Jean Mallet and Hervé Romat, and which call for even more rigour, for the best qualitative satisfaction.
