The fruit of a rare confluence of geology, geography, climate and the extraordinary fungus we call noble rot, Yquem is a miracle of nature, sublimated by prodigious human spirit and know-how. Over its 400-year history, the estate’s managers have honed a winemaking philosophy that is both meticulous and daring, in a quest for perfection so risky that ten entire vintages have not been bottled since 1910. Even the most generous harvests produce just one glass of Yquem per vine. This elixir, of exceptional opulence and complexity, sees its brilliant golden hue evolve in the bottle over the decades, like the sun’s rays from dawn to dusk; inspiring the French novelist Frédéric Dard to describe it as “light drunk”. Light in a bottle… if left in a cellar, it will burn for centuries, alive and evolving, but its raison d’être is always the same: to one day be opened and shared, so that it can enlighten us, awaken our emotions and uplift us in a moment of celebration.
