Château Duplessis was part of the estate that the family of Armand du Plessis, Cardinal de Richelieu, owned in Guyenne, and whom the novels of Alexandre Dumas were to make famous… It was probably his great-nephew, a colourful marshal who was an intimate friend of Voltaire, who made it his home for his hunting parties or his gallant festivities. The estate was divided in two more than 120 years ago. The part that concerns us took the name “Haut Vignoble” to distinguish itself. From that time, it was the object of particular and refined care. Its owner, M. Hauchecorne, was one of the most prominent broker-tasters of the Place de Bordeaux. Its future was then taken in hand by the house of Delor, a house of great renown, which had major improvements carried out, including a vast cellar for ageing in barrels and the installation of a high-performance vat room.
The company Les Grands Crus Réunis applied itself successfully to developing the qualities and renown of this growth. A great connoisseur, Lucien Lurton became its buyer in the 1980s. Since 1992, his daughter Marie-Laure Lurton has presided over the destiny of this growth, as well as that of Château La Tour de Bessan and Château de Villegeorge.
The wines of Château Duplessis have a magnificent ruby colour and a characteristic body. Their solid tannic structure gives them fine ageing ability. Drunk rather young, they go wonderfully with grilled meats. Older, they combine happily with the aroma of a hare or a pheasant…
In 2003, the Terra Vitis label was awarded for the sustainable protection of the vineyard, put in place by Émilie Roullé, technical director of the estate. The Cru Bourgeois classification was confirmed in 2003.
