The estate

In brief

A letter patent of 7 June 1289 from Edward I, king of the English and of Aquitaine, fixes the boundary between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol at the stream of “Tailhayhat”, which is the origin of the cru’s name. Acquired in 1932 by Philippe Nebout, the estate has been run since 1981 by a société civile made up of the Nebout heirs.
The vineyard of Château du Tailhas, in a single block of 11 hectares, is located on the southern slope of the Pomerol plateau, bordering the commune of Saint-Émilion to the east. As a result, it adjoins the grands crus of that appellation, around the place called Figeac.
The siliceous soil mixed with fine gravel rests on a subsoil rich in alios or iron residues.
Planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Tailhas vineyard is cultivated in the traditional way, respecting the old vines.
Harvesting is by hand. Vinification is carried out using modern techniques; at the end of vatting, the wine is aged alternately in vats and in new oak barrels, to develop bouquet and flavour while preserving the characteristics specific to Château du Tailhas.
Bottling then takes place 20 months after the harvest.
The wines of Tailhas show all the characteristics of Pomerol: ripe fruit, undergrowth, a floral nose and a touch of imagination…
The average production is 5,000 cases. Distribution is handled by the Place de Bordeaux and by sales to the château’s private clientele.
