Originally, the Church’s estate was known as the Porte Rouge estate. At the time, it belonged to the Hospitallers, an order that cared for the sick, particularly lepers. Lepers were not allowed to knock on any doors other than the red ones, for reasons of contagion, and were welcomed and cared for by the Hospitallers. A church property for several centuries, Domaine de l’Église was seized and sold during the French Revolution. The last descendant of the Laudard family sold the property to the Castéja family in 1972. Located on the plateau in the heart of Pomerol, Domaine de l’Eglise has an exceptional terroir of clay gravel with a subsoil of iron dross, as do its close neighbours Pétrus, l’Évangile and Clinet. The wines are full-bodied, silky, rich and round, with a dominant Merlot grape variety combined with this exceptional terroir to produce remarkable products.
