Château de Villegeorge

As early as the 18th century, Château Villegeorge was very well known for the quality of its wines, to such an extent that their price equalled that of the Third Growths of 1855.
When the Crus Bourgeois were classified in 1932, the committee of Bordeaux brokers singled out six, to which it awarded the coveted title of “Exceptionnel”. Château de Villegeorge was one of them.
Lucien Lurton, a great connoisseur of the terroirs of the Médoc, immediately spotted the quality of the deep, pure gravel, comparable to that of Margaux. He acquired it in 1973 and patiently undertook its rehabilitation, working to endow it with all the prestige it deserves. The quality of the wines he produced only confirmed the excellence of his choice.
Nineteen years later, in 1992, Lucien Lurton had built a superb empire. When dividing his properties, he assigned this cru, together with Châteaux Duplessis and La Tour de Bessan, to his daughter Marie-Laure. A reciprocal choice: an accomplished oenologist, a woman of the trade raised in the inner circle who has no intention of resting on her laurels, she perpetuates her father’s work with a master’s hand.
Vinified according to traditional methods and aged in oak casks before being bottled at the château, the production is unanimously appreciated by enthusiasts and professionals. The wines of Château de Villegeorge are characterised by their roundness, incomparable charm and great finesse. Fairly young, they delight with grilled meats and good goat’s cheeses. They age with infinite grace and elegance: magnificent table wines, refined and subtle, they are then enjoyed with flavoursome meats accompanied by ceps, and with cheeses such as Comté and Beaufort.
In 2003, the sustainable protection introduced by Émilie Roullé, agricultural engineer, received the Terra Vitis label. Villegeorge was classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in June 2003.
