Listed at the head of the Second Growths in 1855, Château de Myrat, a vineyard in a single block, has been the property of the de Pontac family since 1937. The elegant 18th-century château, surrounded by a park of 8 ha, invites the visitor to reconnect, with a little nostalgia, with bygone days.
After lying dormant for a few years, the vineyard was entirely replanted in 1988 with the original grape varieties: 88% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle.
This rebirth was guided by a single idea: to offer a wine of the highest calibre, a wine worthy of its 1855 classification. Descendants of Jean de Pontac, owner of Haut-Brion in the 17th century, and driven by the same passion for wine, Jacques and Xavier de Pontac deployed every means necessary to produce this Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes, described in 2001 by the Revue du Vin de France as “one of the best wines of Bordeaux”.
Château de Myrat, owing to the particularity of its Barsac terroir, is a wine that is at once mineral, spicy and powerful. Each vintage is quite distinct: delicate or extravagant, it reveals the particularity of its harvest days, always with one priority: to seek finesse, elegance and balance. For the Comte de Pontac, producing a great cru is not a matter of being an artist; it is a matter of rigour, exacting standards and a permanent challenge, that of the fine craft, the made-to-measure, where man remains humble and submits to Mother Nature!
This family passion perfectly illustrates the Pontac motto “Spe sine spe”: “To hope against all hope”.
