The estate

In brief

In November 2003, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, already owner of château Clarke in Listrac-Médoc, acquired a new property: château des Laurets.
This estate consists of a superb 19th-century building (1860) combined with a 97-ha vineyard in a single block straddling two appellations: Puisseguin Saint-Émilion and Montagne Saint-Émilion. The 49.5 ha located in the Montagne Saint-Émilion appellation are dedicated to the production of château de Malengin and château de Parsac.
The Malengin and Parsac sites were added, in the first half of the 19th century, to the holdings of the owners of château des Laurets. The ruins of a feudal castle built around 1330, with the authorisation of King Edward III of England, can be seen there.
The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot on a silt-clay-limestone terroir.
The vineyard is planted on full-south-facing hillsides, with limestone outcrops showing in places, this bedrock that gives Saint-Émilion Merlot all its power and typicity. This excellent terroir undoubtedly has immense potential that was still only partially exploited at the time the estate was acquired.
Beyond the magnificent heritage that this property represents, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild confirms with this purchase the family’s attachment to the world of wine and displays his passion for excellence.
In this spirit, renovation work on the vat room was undertaken from the spring of 2004, in order to offer its wines facilities worthy of their potential and operational for the 2004 harvest.
Work on the buildings continued in 2007 with the complete renovation of the barrel cellar, the offices and the tasting room.
With the benefit of the experience gained at château Clarke and the sound advice of the oenologist Michel Rolland, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild wishes to make château de Malengin a qualitative reference in the Montagne Saint-Émilion area.
