The estate

In brief

“Couchiroy” is its Gascon name. Legend has it that the man who was later to become the good King Henri stopped here for an evening; at the time, he was only King of Navarre. At the end of a long day, the future Henri IV, caught by a violent storm, had, according to the elders, to ask for shelter from winegrowers in the neighbourhood. Another version states that he was returning from the battle of Coutras, on 20 October 1587, and that he ordered his army to camp here for a night.
That is how this corner of the Gironde became “Couchiroy”.
When, at the end of the 18th century, Jean-Baptiste Mareilhac built the magnificent Château de La Louvière, he bought the “Couchiroy” vineyard, which became “Coucheroy” in the 19th century.
Today it is a fine vineyard where dry whites as well as reds are harvested. The whole wine estate, located in the commune of Léognan, is surrounded by prestigious crus of Pessac-Léognan.
With its red wine from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the consumer discovers a fresh, light, easy-drinking and velvety type of Graves, authentic, descended from the “Clarets” of the Middle Ages. It excels with all meats, particularly white meats, and with cheeses.
With its white wine based on Sauvignon, the connoisseur will recognise the authentic dry, refined white characteristic of this part of Pessac-Léognan; it is a wine for seafood and fish.
