Situated north of the village of Avensan, south of Moulis and Listrac and west of Margaux, Citran is an ancient seigneury (1235) that belonged to the Donissan family and their heirs for six hundred years, before being acquired by the Clauzel family in 1832. The current château (19th century) was built on the foundations of the original château (13th century), whose moat is still in perfect condition. In early 1987, the Touko-Haus company bought the estate with the avowed aim of raising its wine to the highest level, and a vast programme of refurbishment of both the vineyards and the cellars got under way. Neglected terroirs were intelligently developed, and neglected plots regained their former prestige. And what has marked – and will continue to mark – Château Citran is the exemplary organisation of the vat room, based on a bold empiricism that is now bearing fruit. A new barrel cellar, a model of elegant sobriety, completes what could be described as a model in this field, and the wines produced at Château Citran reflect this: full-bodied and powerful without being aggressive, they combine finesse and personality. They are the result of a carefully managed vinification process, combining the traditions of the land with the most advanced technology. The Merlaut family acquired the estate in 1996.
