The estate

In brief

The Château Calon vineyard was formed little by little, over the last three centuries, by the family of the present operator. It is gathered around the highest point of the Saint-Émilion vineyard: the Calon hillside, where two windmills have been restored by Jean-Noël Boidron.
Calon depended on the Romanesque abbey of Faize and was only integrated into the commune of Montagne late. The origin of the name is unknown. It should be remembered, however, that on the very site of the present cellar, the remains of a Gallo-Roman grain silo were found. Before that period, the Greeks also came to the region, as other place names bear witness (Arès, Auros, etc). Moreover, the site is of great beauty. It offers a magnificent panoramic view over the whole region.
In Greek, the word “kalon” means beauty. One may therefore think that there is agreement between the etymology of the name, the historical occupation of the place and its geographical situation. This name is thus in itself a whole historical summary. Let us also remember that the Greeks always associated excellence with beauty. The quality of the wines, combined with the beauty of the site, is therefore only the present form of a thousand-year-old historical tradition.
The soil, clay-limestone on Asteries limestone, is often very thin. The grape varieties are classic. An important part of the vineyard, very old, has vines of more than 60 years. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand with great rigour. Fermentation is carried out solely by the natural yeasts of the estate. The wine is carefully aged for two and a half years before being bottled at the château. Since 1981, a 500 m2 cellar, dug into the limestone rock, has made it possible to store the wines in barrels and bottles in the best conditions of temperature and humidity.
Château Calon includes Haut-Calon and Côte-Calon.
Château Calon is selected by many gastronomic columnists. It is moreover distributed by the best négociants of the Place. Only part of the harvest is sold each year. Thus, this growth can pride itself on being one of the few to have old wines available, currently going back to the 1953 vintage.
M. Boidron also owns the part of the estate lying in the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation as well as Château Corbin-Michotte, Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion, and Château Cantelauze in Pomerol and Mayne d’Olivet (Bordeaux Blanc).
