The origins of Bessan Ségur are very ancient. This estate belonged to the Counts of Ségur Cabanac, senior officers and lieutenants of the mayor of Bordeaux, allied to powerful parliamentary families such as the d’Augeard de Pichard and de Verthamon families, who also owned vineyards in the Médoc and elsewhere. Over time Bessan became one of the country residences of the Counts of Ségur.
A family estate since 1947, Bessan Ségur sees its reputation grow every day thanks to the work of Rémi Lacombe, who tirelessly continues to enhance his wine business. For Rémi Lacombe is a “born” entrepreneur in the noble sense of the term, heir in this to his predecessors on the site.
Spread over two communes, the Bessan Ségur vineyard benefits from varied geological and soil conditions that allow the making of a great concentrated wine, rich in tannins and colour. Thus, in Saint-Christoly, the proximity of the estuary provides thermal inertia favourable to the development of the grape varieties and the good ripening of their berries; in the commune of Civrac, the predominantly limestone soil and subsoil give generous and powerful wines.
To these natural features are added precise, even meticulous cultivation practices, such as the systematic sorting of berries on the vine throughout their cycle, right up to the eve of the harvest
The thick walls of Bessan Ségur today shelter a fully temperature-controlled vat room of nine thousand hectolitres. The precious berries are handled with the greatest respect in order to extract the best without ever going to excess. The two-level barrel cellar leads the visitor to a tasting room.
In 2006, Les Vignobles Lacombe received the GS1 France Trophy, which rewards a simple and infallible traceability system covering every stage of viticulture, from vine stock to bottle: a first in the world of wine. Rémi Lacombe could have been satisfied with this recognition, but he wished to go even further, and since 2008 Les Vignobles Lacombe have complied with the ISO 22005 standard on food chain traceability, respecting the general principles and basic requirements applying to the design of the system and its implementation.
His research does not stop there. Concerned for the environment, Rémi Lacombe has also launched a global approach to the “carbon footprint” of his estate. Its objective is to arrive at a climate-“neutral” viticulture, and therefore to identify reduction potential but also to offset the irreducible emissions through purchases.
Château Bessan Ségur is a growth that lives fully in its time, with a remarkable production that many professionals should visit.
The Rémi Lacombe vineyards also operate Château Les Mourlanes in the commune of Couquèques, Château Haut-Canteloup in Saint-Christoly-Médoc and Château La Gravette Lacombe in Lesparre-Médoc, all in the Médoc appellation.
